Design for Disaster, Seismic Speculations

Faultering Lines

The uncanny experience of shifting Terra Firma is similar to that of sailing in rough seas: there is the sense of being vulnerable to forces far grander than ones self, an impossible desire for balance and stability, and, with each wave and stagger, the precarious and slow-motion feeling of teetering on the edge of potential disaster. Through a tension-filled juxtaposition of spaces and forms – including references to both ships and iconic images of home – this painting provides a snapshot of the helplessness felt during a major seismic event.
